Museo del Fútbol (Football Museum), Montevideo
The Football Museum (Museo del Fútbol), located in Montevideo, offers a rich exploration of Uruguayan and global football history. Situated beneath the Olympic Grandstand of the Centenario Stadium in the Batlle Park area, this museum occupies a historically significant space; the stadium was the host venue for the inaugural 1930 FIFA World Cup. Recognizing its cultural and historical significance, FIFA declared the site a Historical Monument of World Football in 1983.
The museum was opened on December 15, 1975, and saw significant remodeling in December 2004, which included the addition of a panoramic elevator to the Tower of Tributes. The tower also houses the founding stone of the Centenario Stadium, laid on July 21, 1929, and accessible to visitors.
The museum spans two floors: the upper level features a permanent exhibition of the Uruguayan Soccer Team's achievements, including titles and historical memorabilia from significant events such as the creation of CONMEBOL and the team's victories in the 1930 and 1950 World Cups, and the 1924 and 1928 Olympics. It displays trophies, vintage attire, and personal items from famous players like José Nasazzi and Obdulio Varela. The ground floor houses an auditorium for documentaries on historic soccer events and hosts temporary exhibits in the entrance hall.
The museum offers guided tours and services in multiple languages: Spanish, English, Portuguese, and French. This multilingual approach ensures that visitors from around the world can fully engage with the rich football heritage showcased at the Football Museum.
