Museo José Luis Bello y Zetina, Puebla

Museo José Luis Bello y Zetina, Puebla

Museo José Luis Bello y Zetina preserves the home and collection of José Luis Bello y Zetina, a philanthropist from a family of art collectors. After the death of their only son, Bello y Zetina and his wife, Julia Haro, became closely involved in charitable work, supporting institutions for children, older people, and vulnerable residents. When he died in 1968, he left the house and its multi-generational collection to a foundation so it could become a museum; it opened to the public in 1972.

The museum keeps the feeling of a private residence rather than a conventional gallery. Its rooms preserve furniture, family objects, porcelain, silver, crystal, photographs, and decorative pieces arranged much as they were in the household. The dining room remains set like a formal 19th-century meal, while other spaces reflect European tastes, including French Imperial-style objects and Napoleonic decoration.

The art collection is the main reason to visit. The collection includes European and Mexican paintings, with works linked to Murillo, Zurbarán, El Greco, Miguel Cabrera, and Agustín Arrieta. Murillo’s El éxtasis de San Francisco de Asís is among its best-known pieces. Sculptures, carved furniture, religious imagery, and decorative objects add to the sense of a private collection turned public heritage.
