Museum Giersch, Frankfurt

Museum Giersch, Frankfurt

The Museum Giersch is an art gallery situated by the Main River in Frankfurt am Main, specifically in the Museumsufer district. It was founded in the year 2000 and boasts a varied collection of artworks, predominantly from artists in the local region. The museum places a special focus on art from the 19th and 20th centuries.

The Museum Giersch is located within a neoclassical villa constructed in the early 1900s for the Holzmann family, who were prominent entrepreneurs of their time. Remarkably, this neoclassical building managed to survive the destruction caused by war along the banks of the River Main. In 1994, a foundation was established by a Frankfurt businessman named Carlo Giersch and his wife Karin. Their aim was to transform this historic villa into a museum dedicated to showcasing the works of artists from the Rhine-Main region. To this day, the foundation continues to oversee the museum's operations.

The museum serves as a vibrant portrayal of the art and cultural history of the Rhine-Main region. It accomplishes this through both its permanent displays and rotating exhibitions. The gallery often displays artworks on loan from significant private collections. The range of exhibits is quite extensive, encompassing paintings, sculptures, photography, graphic art, architecture, and applied art. The ground floor houses the permanent collections, while the upper floors host changing themed exhibitions or other special displays. Additionally, the first floor is available for rental, making it a versatile space for lectures, banquets, or receptions.

Tip:
The entrance fee is very low, the architecture is nice, but how much you enjoy it will ultimately depend on what's on display at the time, so check online.
Be aware that there's not a single word in English, which makes the place somewhat difficult to navigate / fully appreciate for non-German speakers.
