Museum Lukisan Sidik Jari (Fingerprint Painting Museum), Denpasar
Museum Lukisan Sidik Jari, or the Fingerprint Painting Museum, presents one of Bali’s more unusual forms of modern art. Founded by Balinese painter I Gusti Ngurah Gede Pemecutan and established in 1993, it shows how fingertip marks, dots, and strokes can build colour, texture, shadow, and movement without brushes.
One of the main works in the collection depicts the Puputan Badung War, a major event in Bali’s resistance against Dutch forces. The large wall-sized painting is said to contain more than 1.5 million individual fingerprints and took around 18 months to complete. For the artist, it also carries a family memory, as relatives were killed during the fighting at Pemecutan Palace. He has reportedly chosen not to sell the painting, making it both an artwork and a personal memorial.
The museum also works as a small cultural centre rather than only a gallery. The artist’s fingerprint technique earned recognition from the Museum Rekor-Dunia Indonesia, or MURI. Beyond the gallery, visitors may find poetry carved into stone, occasional Balinese dance and music classes, and, with luck, the chance to meet the artist, who lives on the premises.
