Bali Museum, Denpasar

Bali Museum, Denpasar (must see)

Bali Museum is one of the main cultural institutions dedicated to the island’s history, art, and traditional life. Established in the early 20th century with the help of architect P.J. Moojen and local rulers, it stands on the former site of the Royal Palace of Denpasar, which was destroyed during the Dutch invasion in 1906. Its layout recalls a traditional Balinese palace compound, with courtyards, gates, carved stonework, tiled roofs, and pavilions arranged around open spaces.

The museum’s architecture is part of its story. Its main pavilions reflect regional styles from different parts of Bali, including Tabanan in the west, Karangasem in the east, and Buleleng in the north. Near the entrance, the tall Bale Kulkul holds a traditional wooden slit drum once used to call meetings or warn of danger. In the northwest corner, the Bale Bengong, or contemplation pavilion, recalls the kind of quiet resting space once used by royal families.

Inside, the collections cover archaeology, ritual life, textiles, masks, paintings, weapons, musical instruments, and everyday tools. Among the notable objects is a prehistoric stone sarcophagus, often called the “stone coffin,” dated to more than 2,000 years ago. The museum also displays early forms of currency once used in Bali, including shells and old coins from Vietnam and Korea, showing the island’s long connections with trade and exchange.

Other highlights include sacred keris daggers with finely carved hilts and the statue of Men Brayut, a Balinese mother figure symbolizing fertility and prosperity. For tourists, the museum offers a clear introduction to Balinese ceremonies, dance costumes, offerings, carving, and textile traditions.
