Museum of Contemporary Religious Art, Saint Louis

The Museum of Contemporary Religious Art (MOCRA) was the first museum in the world dedicated exclusively to exploring the relationship between contemporary art and religious or spiritual traditions. Founded in 1993 as part of Saint Louis University (SLU), the museum presented works by artists from diverse cultural and faith backgrounds, encouraging visitors to reflect on themes such as belief, identity, justice, hope, suffering, and the human experience.

Rather than representing a single religion, the museum examined spirituality through the language of modern and contemporary art. MOCRA permanently closed its doors on May 31, 2026, after 33 years of operation. Following the closure, Saint Louis University transferred the permanent collection to Saint Louis University’s Museum of Art (SLUMA), where it will be preserved and incorporated into future exhibitions. MOCRA's exhibitions featured paintings, sculptures, photographs, installations, textiles, and multimedia works by internationally recognized and emerging artists. During its operation, the museum regularly rotated its exhibitions, presenting both solo and thematic shows that explored different religious traditions, philosophical ideas, and social issues. Many works encouraged quiet reflection and personal interpretation, while artist talks, panel discussions, lectures, and educational programs provided additional context for visitors interested in the connections between art, culture, and faith.

Beyond its exhibitions, the Museum of Contemporary Religious Art served as a center for dialogue between the arts, religion, and society. Housed in a repurposed 1950s chapel, its intimate gallery spaces offered a unique museum experience, inviting visitors to spend time with thought-provoking works rather than following a traditional historical narrative. By combining contemporary artistic expression with questions of spirituality and human values, the museum provided a distinctive cultural legacy for those interested in both modern art and religious thought.
