Mustafa Kamel Necropolis, Alexandria (must see)
Mustafa Kamel Necropolis is one of the clearest surviving examples of Hellenistic funerary architecture in the Mediterranean world. Discovered by accident in 1933 during ground levelling for a sports field, the necropolis was excavated by Achille Adriani of the Graeco-Roman Museum. It originally contained six tombs, four of which survive today, dating mainly from the 3rd to the 1st centuries BC.
The tombs were not simple sealed chambers. The courtyards served as open-air spaces for funerary meals. Tomb I, the most elaborate, may have belonged to elite Ptolemaic cavalry members, whose painted horsemen suggest high military and social status. The three decorated doorways were also once guarded by painted stone sphinxes, creating an early example of Alexandrian art, where Greek and Egyptian imagery appear together.
The complex also shows careful engineering. Tomb I includes a rock-cut water system with a cistern, a well, basins, and channels, likely used for practical needs and ritual purification. The builders also created an illusion of wealth through stucco masonry. Instead of importing expensive marble, they covered local limestone with plaster and painted it to imitate coloured Mediterranean stone, including pink and green marble effects. This gave the burial chambers a richer appearance while using materials available nearby.
Inside, visitors can still read many details of ancient belief and status through the architecture. A kline sarcophagus, carved like a Greek banquet couch with cushion and pillow details, is among the main features. Tomb II has an underground court, Doric columns, offering spaces, and wall-cut loculi, while Tomb III may once have included a garden courtyard.
