Alexandria Sporting Club, Alexandria

Founded in 1890, Alexandria Sporting Club is one of Egypt’s oldest sports and social clubs, with early roots in recreation grounds used by nearby British officers. The club’s rise was also supported by Prince Omar Toussoun, a prominent member of Egypt’s ruling family and a noted intellectual, who helped secure the land for the institution. Its formal opening on September 10, 1890, attended by Khedive Tawfiq, gave the club a clear place within the social life of the period.

The club became closely associated with its broad green grounds and sporting landscape. Its golf course, an 18-hole, par-70 course, is regarded as one of the oldest active golf courses in Africa and the Middle East. A horse and camel track still circles parts of the fairways, while the older racing stands and later entrance gates show how the club’s appearance evolved over time.

Today, the club remains active in several sports, including basketball, handball, squash, tennis, swimming, golf, and lawn bowls. Its grass lawn bowls field is a rare regional feature, supported by the mild coastal climate. For tourists, the club offers a glimpse of sport, leisure, architecture, and social life carried from the late 19th century into the present.
