Nanluoguxiang Hutong, Beijing

Nanluoguxiang Hutong, Beijing

Nanluoguxiang represents a slender alleyway that lends its name to a historic section at the heart of Beijing, adorned with a blend of traditional architectures spanning across different eras. This district boasts numerous characteristic narrow pathways commonly referred to as hutongs. It finds its place within the Dongcheng district. The alleyway itself stretches about 800 meters (approximately 2,600 feet), extending from North Gulou Street in the upper direction to Di'anmen East Street in the lower direction.

Originating in the Yuan Dynasty and acquiring its present designation around 1750 during the Qing Dynasty, Nanluoguxiang has evolved into a hub of activity. In recent times, the maze of hutongs in this vicinity has morphed into a favored spot for visitors, featuring a myriad of establishments such as restaurants, bars, live music venues, coffeehouses, fast-food outlets, and souvenir stores. Additionally, scattered among these modern additions, one can find ancient siheyuan residences associated with renowned historical and literary figures. Serving the area, the Nanluoguxiang Station of the Beijing Subway commenced operations in 2012 and is conveniently positioned close to the southern entrance of the alleyway.
