Three Stones Kite Company, Beijing

Three Stones Kite Company, Beijing

Visit any Chinese park during a sunny afternoon or weekend, and cast your gaze skyward. Drifting gracefully through the air, guided by the currents, you'll find an array of vibrant kites. These are skillfully piloted by young children, affectionate couples strolling hand in hand, and joyous grandparents proudly displaying their expertise to the new generation.

Kites possess a charmingly classic appeal, and possessing a handmade one serves as a wonderfully nostalgic memento from Beijing. For the finest selection, make your way to Three Stone Kite, conveniently situated within walking distance of the Forbidden City. This cheerful emporium overflows with an assortment of lively kites—depicting birds, fish, butterflies, and dragons—all crafted with bamboo frameworks.

Over the span of three generations, the Liu family has been crafting exquisite, handcrafted kites. Owner Liu Bin acquired the mastery of this traditional Chinese art from his grandfather more than two decades prior to inaugurating his establishment in 2003.

The cozy shop is brimming with incredible depictions of birds, butterflies, elegantly tailed fish, and numerous other auspicious Chinese creatures, all meticulously hand-painted onto resilient bamboo structures. Proprietor Liu Bing, accompanied by his son and sprightly nonagenarian father (who once crafted kites for the Imperial family), are ready to create a customized kite for those seeking an elevated flying experience.

Upon request, Liu can conjure tailored designs, and the establishment periodically hosts kite-making workshops. Even if a park excursion isn't on your agenda, these kites serve as splendid decorative presents.
