National Sanctuary "Sophia of Kyiv", Kiev

The National Sanctuary "Sophia of Kyiv" is one of the most treasured landmarks in Ukraine and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located in the historic center of the city, Saint Sophia Cathedral and its surrounding complex offer visitors a glimpse into the spiritual, cultural, and architectural heart of ancient Kyivan Rus.

Founded in the 11th century by Grand Prince Yaroslav the Wise, the cathedral stands as a symbol of Ukraine’s deep historical roots and its enduring Christian heritage.

The centerpiece of the sanctuary is the magnificent Saint Sophia Cathedral, renowned for its grand Byzantine architecture, soaring domes, and exceptionally preserved mosaics and frescoes that date back nearly a thousand years.

Inside, visitors are awed by intricate religious artwork, including the famous mosaic of the Virgin Orans, and can explore ancient sarcophagi, including that of Yaroslav the Wise himself. The bell tower and surrounding monastic buildings also offer panoramic views of Kyiv’s old town.
