Neue Universitat (New University Building), Heidelberg

Nestled within the bustling University Square ("Universitätsplatz") at the heart of the pedestrian zone and flanked by the University Library and main administration buildings, the New University is a cornerstone of the Old Town campus. Its grand opening in 1931 marked a significant milestone in the university's history, with construction largely made possible by generous contributions from affluent American families. Spearheaded by Jacob Gould Schurman, a distinguished alumnus and former U.S. Ambassador to Germany, this fundraising effort replaced the previous structure dating back to 1828.

Hosting the grand assembly hall, spacious lecture halls, and many seminar rooms, the New University stands as a beacon of learning. Its architectural finesse blends practicality with a subtle nod to the sacred, reminiscent of a church. Atop the entrance looms a statue of Athena, the revered Greek goddess of wisdom, bearing the inscription "To the living spirit".

Stepping into the courtyard, one encounters the enigmatic Witches' Tower, a poignant reminder of the town's medieval past. Once a formidable bastion of defense, it later served as a grim prison for those accused of witchcraft. Today, it serves as a solemn memorial to former students who made the ultimate sacrifice during the First World War.
