Old Stavanger and Upper Strandgate Street, Stavanger (must see)

Upper Strandgate Street, in the heart of Old Stavanger, offers a charming glimpse into the city’s past. Known locally as Gamle Stavanger, this historic neighborhood is famous for its narrow, stone-paved streets and beautifully preserved wooden houses. In fact, it is considered one of the largest surviving collections of wooden houses in Northern Europe, making it one of Stavanger’s most popular attractions.

As you stroll along Upper Strandgate, take a moment to admire the rows of small, mostly white-painted houses, many dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. There are more than 170 of them in Old Stavanger, and what makes the neighborhood particularly appealing is how well they fit together, creating a remarkably harmonious streetscape.

Look closely at the rooftops, and you may notice an interesting architectural detail known as the "Stavanger arch." This distinctive roof feature, often built with an asymmetrical shape, provided additional space in the attic, sometimes allowing it to be used as living quarters. Indeed, this is one of the characteristic elements of the city's traditional wooden architecture.

As you continue along the street, notice the colorful front doors, small windows, flower-filled gardens, and carefully maintained façades. Although the houses look much as they did generations ago, this is not simply an open-air museum. People still live here, which gives the neighborhood a genuine, lived-in atmosphere.

Upper Strandgate is best explored at a leisurely pace. So, take your time, enjoy the quiet surroundings, and look down the little side streets as you pass. It's a pleasant change from Stavanger's busier waterfront and a wonderful opportunity to experience the city's historic character up close.
