Torget (Main Square), Stavanger

Torget, or Stavanger’s Main Square, is found right at the head of the Vagen harbor that cuts into the very center of the city. If you’re approaching from the waterfront, simply walk inland with the harbor behind you. You’ll immediately notice that the square isn’t flat or enclosed in the traditional sense. Instead, it forms a broad, open space that slopes gently uphill toward Stavanger Cathedral.

Entering the square from the harbor, look straight ahead and slightly uphill. Stavanger Cathedral stands beyond the upper end of Torget and is easily identified by its grey stone walls and twin towers. Dating back to the Middle Ages, it provides an impressive historic backdrop to the square.

Now, look around the lower part of Torget, closest to the water. One of the easiest landmarks to spot here is the shrimp sculpture, sitting high on top of a slender column. Its location is particularly fitting, as Stavanger has always had a close relationship with the sea, fishing, and maritime trade.

Depending on the season and time of day, you may find stalls and vendors around the square. This is traditionally Stavanger’s market area, and today you can browse souvenirs, gifts, and other items aimed at visitors. Around the edges of Torget, you’ll also see cafés, restaurants, and bars, many with outdoor tables overlooking the area's activity and harbor.

For a good sense of your surroundings, stand near the lower end of Torget and face the water. Vagen harbor is directly ahead, with Skagenkaien Quay running along the waterfront to your right. Its colorful historic buildings make this one of the most recognizable views in central Stavanger.

Indeed, Torget is a useful orientation point where the medieval city, modern center, and historic harbor all come together.
