Stavanger Maritime Museum, Stavanger

The Stavanger Maritime Museum occupies several historic merchant properties, with former waterfront warehouses facing the harbor and the merchants’ main buildings extending back toward Nedre Strandgate. Small courtyards once separated these working and residential spaces.

From the entrance and reception area, follow the museum signs for the exhibit called “Working at the Docks.” In this section, you'll find the fjord boat, warehouse, market stall, post office, and old-fashioned shop. Together they recreate the busy Stavanger waterfront of the 1950s, when ferries regularly brought passengers, livestock, fruit, and other goods into the city.

From the dockside display, continue by following the signs toward the museum’s historical interiors. Look first for “The General Store” display, featuring a traditional shop counter and shelves filled with period goods. Its interior evokes a Stavanger shop from around 1910 and gives you a sense of everyday commercial life in the old harbor district.

Continue through the historical rooms until you reach the “Shipowner’s Office.” Here, look for the desks, office furniture, documents, and business equipment. This authentic interior belonged to the Monsen family company, which operated from 1812 until 1977, and shows the business side of Stavanger’s maritime trade.

Next, follow the route into “The Merchant’s Apartment.” You’ll know you’ve reached it when the commercial surroundings give way to a domestic interior. Move through the living room, dining room, home office, kitchen, and pantry, all arranged to suggest the home of a prosperous merchant family circa 1910.

From the residential rooms, follow the museum signs and staircase up toward the upper levels of the warehouse section. Keep climbing until you reach the “Sail Loft,” situated high in one of the old warehouses. This large open workspace and traditional sailmaking equipment recreate the kind of setting where craftsmen made and repaired the sails needed by Stavanger’s sailing vessels.

As you move between these exhibits, you realize that their arrangement is part of what makes this museum unusual: you’re not simply looking at maritime objects in display cases but moving through the different environments in which Stavanger’s merchants and maritime workers actually lived and worked.
