Valbergtarnet (Valberg Tower), Stavanger

Standing on a hill overlooking Stavanger’s historic harbor, Valberg Tower is one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks. Built between 1850 and 1853 to a design by architect Christian Heinrich Grosch, this sturdy stone tower once served a very practical purpose: keeping Stavanger safe from fire.

Back in those days, much of Stavanger was built of wood, so fires were a constant concern. From their lookout high above the rooftops, the watchmen kept an eye on the city, ready to sound the alarm at the first sign of smoke or flames. Their warnings gave residents precious time to respond before a fire could spread through the narrow streets.

One of the tower’s best-known watchmen was Tobias Sandstol, who served here for 18 years, until 1922. His name is sometimes associated with Tobias, the friendly old watchman in the tower from Cardamom Town, the famous children’s story by Norwegian author Torbjørn Egner. Although the connection is part of local tradition rather than a firmly established fact, it adds a charming literary touch to the tower’s history.

Today, Valberg Tower is a historic landmark and a reminder of how Stavanger protected itself before modern fire services took over. On the ground floor, a small Watchmen’s Museum offers a closer look at the lives and responsibilities of the men who once worked here, with exhibits illustrating their equipment and daily duties.

Before moving on, take a moment to enjoy the tower’s elevated position. From the surrounding area, you can look down toward the harbor and the old streets of Stavanger. It’s easy to imagine a watchman standing up here more than a century ago, scanning those same rooftops for the slightest sign of trouble.
