Oper Frankfurt (Opera and Play House), Frankfurt

Städtische Bühnen Frankfurt, also known as the municipal stages of Frankfurt, is the official theater company of the city of Frankfurt. This name has been in use since 1919. The company operates under two distinct branches today: Oper Frankfurt, which focuses on opera productions, and Schauspiel Frankfurt, which is dedicated to drama.

Oper Frankfurt, or Frankfurt Opera, holds a prominent position as one of the leading opera houses in Europe. It has earned the title of "Opera House of the Year" multiple times since 2003. The orchestra associated with Oper Frankfurt is called the Frankfurter Opern- und Museumsorchester. The current opera and playhouse was constructed in the aftermath of World War II because the original historical building had been destroyed. The former opera house was subsequently renovated and transformed into the Alte Oper, which now functions as a concert hall.

The new opera house features notable artistic elements, such as a significant painting commissioned from Marc Chagall in 1959, titled "Commedia dell’Arte." The foyer, which is shared by both opera and drama performances, boasts a sculpture by Zoltán Kemény called "Goldwolken" (Golden Clouds).

Oper Frankfurt officially opened its doors in December 1963 and has since served as a launching pad for many renowned singers who began their careers there. These include notable names such as Franz Völker, Edda Moser, Cheryl Studer, and Diana Damrau. Additionally, established artists like Christian Gerhaher, Piotr Beczała, and Jan-Hendrik Rootering have also graced the stage in recent seasons.

Tip:
Select your performance carefully so it includes English sur-titles (if needed) and try to avoid seats "on the sides" – pay a little more for better seats.
