Palazzo Massoni (Massoni Palace), Lucca

Palazzo Massoni (Massoni Palace), Lucca

Located on Via dell'Angelo Custode, Massoni Palace (Palazzo Massoni) is a historic gem in the heart of Lucca. Originally built in 1668 for Giovanni Controni, the palace changed hands in the first half of the 19th century, becoming the residence of the Massoni family. Today, it stands as an exquisite example of 17th-century architecture, with a particularly evocative private garden that remains remarkably preserved.

The garden is a highlight of Massoni Palace, maintaining its original 17th-century layout. Four raised flowerbeds form symmetrical squares, bordered by low walls adorned with grotesque-style decorations. These intricate embellishments include mosaic pebbles, brickwork, and finely carved marble masks. This ornamental motif extends throughout the garden, including a decorated basin positioned against three surrounding walls, enclosed on the west side by the rear façade of the palace.

Visitors walking through the garden encounter orthogonal and lateral paths, where the marble masks and plants blend harmoniously. A grotto with a fountain graces the front wall, featuring a marble female figure, two sculpted eagles, and a rectangular basin adorned with a coat of arms, upheld by two dog statues.

Beyond its architectural charm, Massoni Palace also functions as a cultural and artistic venue, hosting exhibitions that span multiple historical periods and artistic styles. The collections feature ancient artifacts, paintings, sculptures, and other artistic treasures, making it a destination of interest for art enthusiasts and history lovers alike.

With its rich history, elegant architecture, and meticulously designed garden, Massoni Palace remains one of Lucca’s most remarkable historic residences.
