Parish Church of Sant Miquel, Palma de Mallorca

Parish Church of Sant Miquel, Palma de Mallorca

Nestled in the heart of Palma’s charming Old Town, the Parish Church of Sant Miquel stands as one of the city’s oldest sacred sites, built over the ruins of the great mosque of Madina Mayurqa-with the first Christian Mass in Palma held here on December 31, 1229. As one of the original four medieval parish churches of Palma, its name honors the Dominican confessor Miquel de Fabra, spiritual advisor to King Jaume I of Aragon, who initiated the Christian reconquest of Mallorca.

The architectural heart of the church retains a striking Gothic façade begun around 1398 by sculptor Pere de Sant Joan, featuring a tympanum with a seated Madonna flanked by angel‑musicians, and a sculpted cast of Ramon Llull in one of the archivolts. While a devastating fire in the 16th century destroyed much of the original structure, what remains includes the austere yet elegant façade and the characteristic square bell tower topped with a pyramid‑shaped roof typical of Mallorcan style.

Once inside, visitors discover a single‑nave interior flanked by rib‑vaulted side chapels, crowned by a richly Baroque high altar created by Francesc Herrera. Above the presbytery, a series of frescoes by Jaume Morey depicts Saint Michael’s battle against the rebellious angels, while paintings by Joan Muntaner Cladera on the side chapels explore his apparitions. One of the most venerated features is the image of the Mare de Déu de la Salut-the Virgin of Health-Beloved patroness of Palma. According to popular tradition, she accompanied King Jaume I during his sea voyage to Mallorca and has been revered in her marble‑like alabaster statue ever since.

As of 2018, the church has held the status of minor basilica, reflecting its pilgrimage importance and the depth of its heritage komoot. Open most days to visitors-with brief closures during services-it offers a peaceful retreat amid sleek city bustle.
