Patung Catur Muka (Catur Muka Statue), Denpasar (must see)
Patung Catur Muka, or the Catur Muka Statue, is a prominent civic landmark and one of the main visual reference points in Bali’s capital region. Erected in 1973, with preparations possibly beginning a few years earlier, it was designed by I Gusti Nyoman Lempad, the respected Balinese artist from Ubud known for his temple architecture, fine linear drawings, and broad influence on Balinese art. The statue represents Brahma, the Hindu god of creation, with four faces looking toward the four cardinal directions.
The monument is about 9 metres tall and is carved from solid granite, which gives it a firmer and more lasting presence than many Balinese statues made from softer local stone. It stands on a lotus-shaped base within a circular fountain. In Hindu symbolism, the lotus is linked with creation, purity, and the centre of the universe, making it a fitting support for a figure associated with divine creation and balance.
Each face is connected with a direction and a spiritual quality: wisdom to the east, compassion to the west, soul purification or strength to the north, and peace to the south. Together, they present the statue as a symbolic guardian of the surrounding public space, where sacred imagery, civic buildings, traffic, and everyday routines meet.
The area also has older layers of local history. A colonial-era bell clock nearby, installed in the early 20th century, recalls a time when the intersection was known as the “Bell Quarter.” The statue also marks the official geographical zero point from which distances to other parts of Bali are measured. By day, visitors usually see it amid steady traffic and city movement; at night, the surrounding fountain may be lit with coloured water displays, giving the monument a different mood after dark.
