Pura Jagatnatha (Jagatnatha Temple), Denpasar (must see)
Pura Jagatnatha, or Jagatnatha Temple, is an important public temple dedicated to Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa, the supreme divine principle in Balinese Hindu belief. Often dated to 1953, with major construction and completion also associated with the 1960s and its inauguration in 1968, it was created as a central place of worship for residents and newcomers without a local family or village temple.
The temple also carries civic meaning because of its position beside Puputan Badung Square, a place associated with the tragic events of 1906, when Balinese royalty and followers chose ritual death rather than surrender to Dutch colonial forces. In this setting, the temple can be read as a symbol of spiritual resilience after violence and loss. Its upkeep is rooted in community life, with local Hindu organisations and volunteers helping maintain the temple rather than a single family lineage.
Architecturally, the temple follows Balinese sacred design while using a more open, unified courtyard layout than the usual three-courtyard arrangement. Its central Padmasana, or lotus throne, is carved from white coral and rises above a base showing the cosmic turtle Bedawang Nala and two mythical serpents, symbolising the foundation of the world in Balinese Hindu cosmology. Carved gateways, shrine structures, and protective walls help separate everyday space from the sacred inner area.
The temple becomes especially active during full moon and new moon ceremonies, when worshippers arrive in traditional dress with offerings, incense, and flowers. On major occasions, visitors may see shadow puppets, ritual music, or traditional dances. Visitors are expected to dress respectfully, wear a sarong and sash when required, and avoid disturbing prayers or ceremonies.
