Philharmonic Garden, Baku
The Philharmonic Garden is a historic and picturesque park located in Baku, adjacent to the ancient walls of the Baku fortress. Established in 1830, it is the oldest park in Baku and covers an area of 4.6 hectares (11 acres). Originally known as Mikhaelovsky Garden after the governor, the garden has evolved significantly over the centuries.
The park’s foundation is unique, with ship captains from Iran originally asked to bring sacks of soil to contribute to its creation. This imported soil supported the cultivation of a diverse array of trees and flowers, adding to the park's lush greenery. Over the years, the park expanded and underwent several renovations, the most recent of which began in 2007. These renovations included the addition of an old-fashioned fountain designed by the French company Inter Art, enhancing the park's aesthetic appeal.
A key architectural feature within the garden is the stunning Azerbaijan State Philharmonic Hall, constructed in the early 20th century. While there were plans to build a concert hall during this period, they were scaled back due to objections over tree felling, and only a summer pavilion was completed.
Today, the Philharmonic Garden is not only a center for cultural events but also a serene oasis in the heart of Baku. It is adorned with a central big fountain, various trees, and plant life. The park is a popular spot for both locals and tourists, offering several restaurants and a scenic environment ideal for strolls. Adding to its charm are the colorful parrots that freely fly around, contributing to the park’s vibrant and exotic atmosphere.
