Pine Street Market, Portland

Pine Street Market is an indoor food hall set inside the historic United Carriage and Baggage Transfer Building. Completed in 1886, the structure originally served as a storage facility for horses and carriages, with stalls on its upper floor and rooftop water tanks used for cleaning. Exposed beams, timber columns, brick walls, and high ceilings preserve much of its former warehouse character. The market opened in 2016, giving the building a new public purpose.

Visitors can choose from several compact food counters arranged around shared seating areas. Current options include handmade dumplings and bao, ramen and fried chicken, Thai comfort food, juices, smoothies, açaí bowls, mini doughnuts, local beers, and speciality cocktails. Each vendor operates separately, allowing groups to order different dishes and eat together at communal wooden tables.

The atmosphere is casual and suitable for lunch, a quick snack, or an informal evening meal. Open kitchens allow diners to watch some dishes being prepared, while large windows and rows of hanging lights brighten the hall. Seating is generally unreserved, so visitors can explore the counters before finding a place at one of the long tables.
