Midtown Beer Garden (Fifth Avenue Pod), Portland

Now known as Midtown Beer Garden, this long-running food cart gathering began operating in the early 1980s and is considered the oldest surviving downtown pod. It became the last large food cart pod remaining in the heart of downtown after the nearby Alder Street pod closed in 2019. The site reflects the city's long-standing food cart tradition, where independent businesses can introduce creative menus without the expense of opening a full restaurant.

More than 25 carts offer a changing selection of international dishes, including Mexican, Thai, Middle Eastern, Japanese, Korean, American, vegetarian, and vegan food, along with coffee, desserts, and fresh drinks. Several well-known businesses, including Bing Mi and Stretch the Noodle, first built their reputation here before expanding into permanent locations. Groups can choose from different cuisines, while a dedicated cart offers treats for dogs.

In 2022, an accidental propane explosion severely damaged part of the pod and nearby buildings. Rather than ending its history, the incident led to a complete redevelopment of the site. Reopened in 2023 as Midtown Beer Garden, the renovated site features covered seating, public restrooms, a performance stage, a bar, and improved safety measures. It also hosts live music and community events.
