Third Avenue Pod, Portland
Third Avenue Food Cart Pod is a long-established sidewalk cluster known for its practical, no-frills layout. Unlike newer food-cart areas with covered seating and beer gardens, it retains the compact arrangement associated with the early food-cart boom. Service windows, handwritten menus and open cooking areas create a direct street-food experience, especially during busy weekday lunch hours.
The pod is often called the “Gyro District” because of its concentration of Egyptian and Middle Eastern vendors. Elmasry Egyptian Cuisine, regarded as the area’s first Egyptian food stand, serves falafel, kofta, shawarma, dolmades and platters topped with its distinctive spicy sauce. Buns on the Run, founded in 2016, introduced a halal take on American favourites such as cheesesteaks. Other carts offer Thai, Vietnamese and Mexican dishes, along with bao buns, bubble tea and fruit smoothies.
Several Mediterranean vendors remain open later than typical lunchtime carts, serving bar-goers, evening workers and visitors after dark. Seating is limited, so most meals are prepared for takeaway. Diners often carry their food to the nearby riverfront park, where benches and lawns provide space for an informal picnic. The pod’s long history and range of immigrant-run kitchens have also made it a regular stop on local food-cart tours.
