The Polish Institute and Sikorski Museum in South Kensington serve as a prominent symbol of the area's ties to Poland. Situated to the east of the Royal Geographical Society, this museum primarily focuses on World War II military artifacts and houses the personal belongings of General Wladyslaw Sikorski, the prewar prime minister who sought refuge in London in 1939, only to tragically perish in a mysterious plane crash in 1943. The post-war absence of a non-Communist leader of Sikorski's stature was a source of lament for exiled Poles for the subsequent four decades.
