Praça Artur Oscar (Arthur Oscar Square), Recife
Praça Artur Oscar, often called Praça do Arsenal by locals, is one of the best-known public spaces in the historic waterfront district. Its name honors Artur Oscar de Andrade Guimarães, a figure from the early Republican period, but in everyday use the square is more closely linked to the former naval arsenal that once shaped this part of the neighborhood. Set within a well-preserved historic area, it serves as both a meeting point and an entry into the district’s cultural setting.
The square features paved areas, mature trees, and an open layout that allows clear views of the surrounding buildings. Its design reflects early 20th-century planning, with later contributions by Roberto Burle Marx. A bust of Admiral Tamandaré adds a historical element, while the space remains simple and practical for walking, resting, and small gatherings.
Praça Artur Oscar is close to several cultural sites in the old port area, including Torre Malakoff, Paço do Frevo, and Rua do Bom Jesus. Nearby, the Museu de Bonecos Gigantes displays the large puppets used in Carnival, offering insight into local traditions. A short walk also leads to Marco Zero Square, the reference point from which distances are measured. Throughout the day, the square is used by visitors, workers, and residents, reflecting both the history and the daily life of the area.
