Paco do Frevo (Frevo Palace), Recife

Paço do Frevo is a cultural center dedicated to frevo, a lively music and dance tradition recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. Opened in 2014, it was created to preserve and promote frevo, which developed through carnival processions and street performances. It is housed in the former Western Telegraph Company building, a neoclassical structure from 1908 later restored for this purpose.

The building is known for its bright, contrasting colors and angular design, reflecting the rhythm and movement associated with the dance. Inside, exhibitions show photographs, films, and objects such as instruments, costumes, and the small umbrellas used by performers. They explain how frevo combines marching band music with fast, capoeira-influenced footwork.

Alongside exhibitions, the center focuses on live experience and education. Performances, rehearsals, and workshops give visitors a chance to see frevo in practice and learn its basic steps. The site also supports research and maintains archives on music and choreography, functioning as both a museum and a space where the tradition continues in practice.
