Torre Malakoff (Malakoff Tower), Recife

Torre Malakoff (Malakoff Tower), Recife

Torre Malakoff is a 19th-century tower linked to the old naval and port history of Recife. Built between 1835 and 1855, it originally served as an observatory and as the monumental entrance to the former Navy Arsenal. Its name refers to the Malakoff tower at Sevastopol, made famous during the Crimean War, a conflict closely followed in local newspapers at the time.

The building stands out for its solid, fortress-like form, with pale walls, arched openings, and a simple but distinctive profile. Although it was not a military fort in the usual sense, its design suggests strength and surveillance, fitting its role beside a busy port zone. For many years, Torre Malakoff’s clock and signalling systems served as an official time reference, helping coordinate Navy work and daily city life. After the Navy Arsenal was dismantled in the early Republican period, the tower was left in a vulnerable condition and was even threatened with demolition, but local cultural and historical groups helped defend its preservation.

Restored in 1999, Torre Malakoff later gained a new role as a cultural space connected with art, science, technology, and astronomy. Today, Torre Malakoff hosts exhibitions and science-related activities, including skywatching programs. Its appeal lies in the contrast between its historic naval form and its present role as a space for public culture and civic memory.
