Rua do Bom Jesus (Street of Good Jesus), Recife

Rua do Bom Jesus (Street of Good Jesus), Recife

This historic street forms part of an early colonial quarter shaped by trade and maritime activity. Its narrow layout and stone paving reflect urban planning from the 17th century, when the area grew as a commercial hub linked to the nearby port. Buildings stand in continuous rows with ground floors opening onto the street and simple upper windows and balconies. It has been named one of the most beautiful streets in the world by Architectural Digest.

A key site along this route is the Kahal Zur Israel Synagogue, known as the first synagogue established in the Americas. It was created during the period of Dutch administration, when a Jewish community settled and practiced openly. The restored building now functions as a museum with exhibits on religious life and migration. Other cultural points include the Embaixada dos Bonecos Gigantes, which displays large carnival figures, and a bronze statue of Antonio Maria, a composer linked to samba-canção.

Today, the street functions as a cultural space where history and everyday activity meet. Shops, cafés, and small venues fill the preserved buildings, attracting locals and visitors. The façades show contrasting colors, with wooden doors, iron railings, and tiled details. On Sundays, the area becomes an open-air handicraft market with local goods, food, and live music.
