Providence Train Station, Providence
Providence Train Station is the state’s main intercity rail hub and a practical arrival point for visitors. Opened in 1986, it replaced earlier Union Station facilities after the tracks were realigned and partly lowered, freeing former railway land for redevelopment. The station serves Amtrak’s Acela and Northeast Regional routes, along with MBTA commuter trains connecting Boston, the airport, and communities farther south.
The one-story building was designed by Marilyn Jordan Taylor of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. Its stone-clad exterior has a long horizontal form, paired columns, a terraced entrance plaza, and an angled clock tower with two visible faces. Inside, the waiting room is covered by a shallow dome with a central oculus. Large windows and glass-block panels bring natural light onto the tile and stone surfaces.
The station stands below the statehouse grounds and within walking distance of government buildings, parks, shopping areas, and cultural attractions. Passengers reach the tracks by descending from the main waiting level to the platforms below. A modernization project launched in 2024 includes expanded seating and restrooms, improved accessibility, clearer information displays, and updates to the building’s mechanical and safety systems.
