Veterans Memorial Auditorium, Providence

Veterans Memorial Auditorium, commonly known as The VETS, is a historic performing arts venue that opened in 1950. Its story began in 1927, when Rhode Island Freemasons commissioned Osgood & Osgood to design a grand Masonic complex. The Great Depression halted construction, and wartime conditions caused further delays before the state completed the theatre. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The auditorium combines monumental Classical Revival architecture with an ornate concert hall seating just over 2,000 people. Inside are a gilded proscenium arch, balconies, decorative plasterwork and ceiling murals with allegorical and heraldic imagery. A distinctive local feature is the series of shields representing Rhode Island’s original 39 cities and towns. The hall is also valued for its clear acoustics and broad stage.

The VETS hosts orchestral concerts, ballet, touring musicians, comedy, community ceremonies and other live events. It has long served as a home stage for local cultural organizations, including the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra. Restoration projects have preserved historic painting and gilding while improving seating, accessibility, lighting, climate control and backstage facilities. Entry is generally connected to scheduled performances, so visitors should review the programme and ticket information before arriving.
