Raeapteek (Town Hall Pharmacy), Tallinn
The Town Hall Pharmacy is one of the oldest continuously operating pharmacies in Europe and the oldest surviving commercial enterprise in Tallinn. While its exact founding date remains uncertain, records confirm that it was already in operation by 1422, and some historians suggest it may date as early as 1415. Remarkably, it has functioned in the same building for over six centuries, serving as both a medical institution and a part of everyday urban life since the medieval period.
The pharmacy played an important role in the city’s development, providing remedies at a time when medicine combined practical knowledge with tradition. Early records mention a pharmacist named Johann Molner in the 15th century, indicating that medicinal products were already being dispensed here during that time. Later, the pharmacy came under the long stewardship of the Burchart family, who managed it from the 16th to the 19th century and helped establish its reputation.
Inside, the space preserves the atmosphere of a traditional apothecary. Shelves lined with jars, antique tools, and displays of historic ingredients offer insight into earlier medical practices. Remedies once included herbs, spices, and more unusual components typical of medieval treatments. Today, Raeapteek continues to operate as a working pharmacy while also functioning as a small museum. Visitors can still purchase modern medicines, but they can also explore exhibits that trace the history of pharmacy in the city.
