Rosenau Park, Nuremberg

Rosenau Park, Nuremberg

Rosenau Park, covering approximately 3 hectares, is a picturesque public park in Nuremberg. This tranquil green space is nestled west of the Fürth Gate, just outside the historic Old Town walls, in an area that geologically represents a dry oxbow lake of the nearby Pegnitz River.

The park has a rich history where the Teutonic Knights operated a significant laundry bleaching site during the Middle Ages, complemented by a fish pond with a central island. In 1815, the transformation into a garden began under Friedrich Wilhelm Bock and later expanded into a public park by Johann David Wiß in 1827, who named it "Rosenau" after his wife, Rosina Alexandrina. The site was further developed into a sophisticated park under the patronage of Carl Alexander Heideloff, who in 1840 built the notable "Alhambra" building on the premises.

By 1884, the park had become a beloved excursion spot and was managed by the Rosenau-Anlagen-Gesellschaft, which later sold it to the city in 1893 due to financial difficulties. The city upgraded the park, installing electric lighting and enhancing the walkways, making it a favored public space.

Today, Rosenau Park is known for its expansive meadows, clusters of ancient trees, and the iconic Minnesinger Fountain by Philipp Kittler, originally placed in 1905 and relocated here after the war. The park also features a small café kiosk in the northern section, offering refreshments and snacks, making it a cherished spot for relaxation and recreation in Nuremberg.

Nuremberg Introduction Walking Tour

The most "German" of all cities in Germany, Nuremberg has witnessed many historic events in its lifetime. Sadly, the first thing immediately associated with Nuremberg is the rise of the Third Reich, the Nazi rallies, and the postwar trials over the Nazi leaders. Indeed, the city was favored by Hitler, who planned to build here a grandiose architectural complex for his party.

Hitler's Nuremberg Tour

Despite Nuremberg's storybook appearance, the city's not so distant past is rather dark. Back in 1933, amid the rise of the Third Reich, the Nazis worked really hard to leave their stamp on the city, prettifying it and renovating the architecture in a bid to accommodate their massive rallies and bombastic military parades.

In fact, no other city in Germany is more intertwined with the...  view more

The historical center of Nuremberg, Old Town (German: Altstadt) is easily differentiated from other parts of the city. Divided in two by the Pegnitz River, the district represents a complex architectural ensemble with a maze of historical lanes (e.g. Weissgerbergasse) packed with half-timber houses, linked by centuries-old bridges, such as Maxbrücke, and set against the picturesque backdrops of...  view more
