Rubin Museum of Art, New York
If you're seeking respite from the hustle and bustle of NYC, the Rubin Museum offers a tranquil oasis showcasing exquisite art from the Himalayas. Originally established by an American couple captivated by the region's art, this museum holds a secular origin while evoking a profound sense of spirituality.
Its collection includes paintings, drawings, sculptures, and artifacts, primarily of religious significance, utilized by itinerant monks to impart Buddhist teachings and aid devotees in their meditation practices. The artworks are often rendered on fabric, enabling easy portability as they were intended to be rolled up and carried along. Many of these masterpieces depict the tales of various Buddhas, featuring serene meditating figures with radiant halos, fierce demons, wise instructors, and ordinary people, adorned in vibrant hues of deep blues, ruby reds, emerald greens, and dazzling golds. With around 1,500 works on display, the museum captivates visitors with its sheer beauty.
Situated on the former site of Barney's Department Store, the Rubins specifically chose this location due to the resemblance of its central circular stairway to a "mandala," a cosmic diagram in Tantric Buddhism. Beyond the remarkable art collection, the museum also hosts a diverse range of lectures, performances, film screenings, and other engaging events. Notably, their programs cater to children and teenagers exceptionally well, providing enriching experiences for younger audiences.
On the first level, visitors can find a delightful Himalayan-themed café, adding to the well-stocked bookstore.
