Russian Orthodox Church, Rabat

The Holy Resurrection Church in Rabat is the oldest of the three functioning Orthodox churches in Morocco. Established under the jurisdiction of the Russian Orthodox Church, its foundation stone was laid on July 6, 1931, and it was officially consecrated on November 13, 1932, by Metropolitan Eulogius (Georgiyevsky) in honor of the Holy Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Located in the southwestern part of Rabat, this church holds regular Sunday services and follows the old Julian calendar, meaning Orthodox Christmas is celebrated in January. The liturgical services, especially those leading up to the church’s feast days, are known for their solemn beauty.

Inside, the church is adorned with hand-painted iconography that was completed in 2011 by icon painters from Moscow, giving it an intimate yet richly spiritual atmosphere. The church is open to visitors whenever the priest is in town, which is most of the time.

A historical and spiritual landmark, the Holy Resurrection Church remains a key place of worship for the Orthodox Christian community in Morocco.
