Sankt Paul (St. Paul's Church), Aachen
St. Paul began as the church of a Dominican monastery. The Gothic hall church was built around 1400 (a dated stone points to 1405 as the time the main building was finished). It was first a monastery church and later became a parish church. Over the centuries it went through repairs and changes, shaped by donations, rebuilding, and changing needs.
From the outside, the church shows a clear Gothic form with a long shape, tall pointed windows, and a simple layout typical of mendicant orders. A later addition is the decorated Rosenkranz portal from 1705. The building was heavily damaged during the bombing in July 1943 and largely rebuilt by 1955.
The interior is no longer used for regular worship. The church was profaned in 2009 and has served as the diocesan archive since 2018. For this new role, a modern structure was built inside the historic shell, creating archive rooms while preserving the old outer walls. Access is limited, but the exterior still shows layers of Gothic design, later changes, and post-war rebuilding.
