Annakirche (St. Anne's Church), Aachen

Annakirche (St. Anne's Church), Aachen

Annakirche (St. Anne's Church) began as a monastery church in the early 16th century. It was founded in 1511 and consecrated in 1532 as part of the Benedictine monastery of Saint Joachim and Saint Anne. The dedication to Saint Anne reflects her importance in Christian teaching and family life. In 1803, during secular reforms under Napoleon, the church was handed over to the Protestant community, making it the oldest Protestant church in the area.

The church was largely shaped by a Baroque redesign in the mid-1700s. Around 1748, the Aachen architect Johann Joseph Couven reworked much of the building. During the Second World War, it was badly damaged in air raids in 1943 and 1944 and rebuilt between 1950 and 1951. Because of this, the interior is simple and modern in style.

Inside, the church has a bright and simple design shaped by postwar rebuilding. Decoration is limited, with simple lines and light surfaces that help create good acoustics. The church is known for concerts, weddings, and regular services. Visitors often come for a quiet visit or to attend musical events.
