Scaturchio, Naples

Scaturchio, Naples

Scaturchio has long stood as one of the city’s most celebrated pastry institutions. Established more than a century ago and still located in Piazza San Domenico Maggiore, the pastry shop is widely regarded as a symbol of Neapolitan confectionery, balancing deep-rooted tradition with a constant drive for innovation. For generations, it has been part of everyday life in Naples, accompanying everything from morning coffee breaks to evening aperitifs and sweet indulgences.

The story of Scaturchio began in the early 1900s, when the Scaturchio brothers opened a pastry shop during a period when Naples was flourishing with cafés, elegant promenades, and a rich dessert culture shaped by convent traditions. They introduced Calabrian almond paste to the city and later expanded into chocolate-making, building a reputation that quickly elevated the name among Naples’ finest pastry houses. After the First World War, Giovanni Scaturchio returned to Naples with his Austrian wife, bringing Central European influences such as strudel and Sachertorte into the family’s repertoire while refining beloved local specialties.

Over the decades, Scaturchio became known not only for preserving classic Neapolitan sweets but also for creating new icons. The famous Ministeriale chocolate remains one of its best-known inventions, protected by a closely guarded recipe, while the Brioche del Danubio and the Vesuvio babà further strengthened its reputation for creativity. Today, with a large team of pastry chefs, decorators, and consultants, Scaturchio continues to represent the meeting point between craftsmanship and evolution, remaining a landmark for both locals and visitors seeking an authentic taste of Naples.

Hence the nickname – “the city of 500 domes”.
