Sculpture Museum, Reykjavik

Sculpture Museum, Reykjavik

The Reykjavik Art Museum, established in 1973, stands as Iceland's largest institution dedicated to visual arts. It encompasses five distinct art collections: one that features general artwork from Reykjavik city, including outdoor installations within the city; another showcasing the works of Erró; a collection dedicated to Kjarval; the Ásmundur Sveinsson Sculpture Museum; and a collection from the architecture department.

The Ásmundur Sveinsson Sculpture Museum, inaugurated in 1983, is dedicated to the sculptures and drawings of Ásmundur Sveinsson (1893–1982). This museum offers a comprehensive representation of Ásmundur's entire artistic journey, presenting his works thematically and in conjunction with pieces by other artists. Ásmundur was a pioneer of sculpture art in Iceland, and his creations can be found both outdoors and indoors throughout the country.

Inside the museum, visitors can view Ásmundur's sculptures and drawings, as well as explore the artist's former residence and studio, which he primarily designed and constructed himself from 1942 to 1950. The architectural style of the building blends elements from Arab culture with Mediterranean influences. A sculpture garden surrounds the museum, featuring the artist's works, and is open to the public year-round. Artwork from the museum is also displayed in public buildings and open spaces throughout the city.

The museum is open daily: May 1st - Sept. 30th: at 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.; Oct. 1st - April 30th: 1 p.m. - 5 p.m.
