Sheffield Bioincubator, Sheffield

Sheffield Bioincubator, Sheffield

The Ella Armitage Building, formerly known as the Sheffield Bioincubator, is a repurposed innovation center in Sheffield, that initially served as a hub for emerging technology and bioscience enterprises. Established to foster entrepreneurship in the bioscience sector, it provided offices and world-class laboratory facilities, along with strong IT and business support, to small and medium enterprises. Strategically linked to the University of Sheffield, the Bioincubator aimed to nurture the growth of a technology and bioscience cluster within the Sheffield City Region.

The Sheffield Bioincubator was launched in February 2006 by Lord Sainsbury as part of a broader initiative to promote bioscience and technology entrepreneurship. The project was funded by the European Regional Development Fund, the University of Sheffield, and Yorkshire Forward, with major investments from the University of Sheffield. The Kroto Innovation Centre, a partner facility, opened in 2007 to support regional entrepreneurship.

The Bioincubator's strategic location near Sheffield University and its state-of-the-art facilities made it an attractive environment for bioscience ventures. However, the building ceased commercial activities in 2017 and was repurposed by the University of Sheffield for teaching and research purposes. Renamed the Ella Armitage Building, it now houses the Modern Languages Teaching Centre, the Grantham Centre, and the Department of Archaeology, continuing its legacy of supporting academic and scientific advancement in a new capacity.
