Sinagoga Mare (Great Synagogue), Iasi

Sinagoga Mare (Great Synagogue), Iasi

Sinagoga Mare (Great Synagogue) is the oldest surviving synagogue in Romania and one of the country’s most important Jewish heritage sites. Built in 1671 under Prince Gheorghe Duca, it reflects the long presence of a Jewish community that once played a major role in local trade, religious life, and culture. Before the Second World War, the area had more than 110 synagogues and prayer houses, but only a few traces of that dense Jewish landscape remain today.

The building combines traditional Jewish religious architecture with local construction methods. Set partly below street level, it has thick masonry walls, a simple exterior, a central bimah, and a decorated Holy Ark for the Torah scrolls. Its large dome, added during later renovations, changed the appearance of the prayer hall, while the interior still preserves details linked to worship and community memory.

The synagogue also carries the memory of loss and survival. Its women’s gallery includes a small museum with documents, photographs, and religious objects connected to Jewish life in the region. Nearby memorial elements recall the victims of the 1941 pogrom. Restored and reopened after years of deterioration, the synagogue remains both a place of worship and a cultural monument.
