Spominski park Navje (Navje Memorial Park), Ljubljana

Spominski park Navje (Navje Memorial Park) occupies the remaining section of the former St. Christopher’s Cemetery, which served as the main burial ground from 1779 until the 1930s. In the late 1930s, architect Jože Plečnik worked with architect Ivo Spinčič and gardener Anton Lap to transform the area into a Slovenian national pantheon. The name Navje was proposed by geographer and linguist Josip Wester and derives from the old Slavic term nav, associated with the souls or spirits of the dead.

A central feature is the monumental Classicist arcade designed in 1865 by architect Franc Pollak. Plečnik preserved the structure and used it to shelter tombstones and memorials belonging to important Slovenian cultural and public figures. Four stone columns, originally designed by Plečnik for the Glasbena matica building, were moved to Navje after the Second World War.

The memorials include those of Matija Čop, Valentin Vodnik, Fran Levstik, Josip Stritar, Anton Aškerc, Janez Bleiweis, Dragotin Kette, Josip Murn, and Oton Župančič. Tree-lined paths, lawns, and seating areas surround the historic monuments, creating a peaceful setting for reflection. The park is no longer an active cemetery but functions as an open-air memorial where visitors can explore inscriptions, funerary sculpture, and Plečnik’s thoughtful combination of architecture and landscape design.
