Slovenski etnografski muzej (Slovene Ethnographic Museum), Ljubljana

Founded in 1923, the Slovene Ethnographic Museum explores everyday life, customs, crafts, and identity. Its library holds over 25,000 specialist works, including material inherited from the Provincial Museum of Carniola. The museum occupies a former Habsburg military barracks complex built between 1886 and 1889, later transformed from a restricted military site into an open cultural centre described as “a museum about people, for people.”

Permanent displays combine historic objects, photographs, films, and interactive interpretation. A large traditional wooden fishing boat forms one of the main gallery centrepieces, illustrating fishing and transport traditions connected with coastal and inland waters. The collection includes UNESCO-recognised Kurent carnival costumes and a reconstructed workshop devoted to decorated honey-bread hearts and candle-making.

The museum encourages visitors to experience heritage directly. Its pottery and weaving studios host expert-led workshops in traditional techniques, while the family-focused Ethno-Maze includes replica clothing, recorded sounds, and materials designed to be handled. Temporary exhibitions, lectures, performances, and craft activities connect historic traditions with contemporary questions about migration, identity, work, and community life.
