St. Mary's Church Bishophill Junior, York

St. Mary's Church Bishophill Junior, York

Saint Mary's Church Bishophill Junior is a Grade I listed parish church located in the Bishophill area of York. It is part of the Church of England and is known for its rich historical heritage, dating back to the 10th century. The oldest part of the church is its tower, notable for incorporating Roman stones, suggesting a deep architectural history. The tower was originally heightened in the 11th century, likely before the Norman Conquest, with battlements added in 1411.

The church's structure includes an 11th-century nave that features a 12th-century north arcade and north aisle. The chancel of the church dates back to the 13th century, adding to the layered historical narrative of the building. Both the church's font and bells are medieval, emphasizing its longstanding ecclesiastical use.

Significant restoration work was undertaken between 1860 and 1861 by J.B. and W. Atkinson. During this period, the original pews were removed, the floor raised, and both the porch and windows were replaced to modify the church’s interior and exterior significantly. The restoration also exposed the open timber roof by removing flat ceilings, and the chancel saw renovations by architect Ewan Christian. In 1889, the church’s aesthetic was further enhanced by Temple Lushington Moore, who added a new pulpit and reredos.

The pipe organ, dating from 1864, was originally made by William Denman for the Spiritualist Church on Spen Lane, York. It found its way to the Freemasons’ Hall before being installed in Saint Mary's in 1986 by Principal Pipe Organs. Details of the organ are maintained on the National Pipe Organ Register, highlighting its intricate design and historical significance.

Saint Mary's Church Bishophill Junior stands as a testament to the layers of religious, cultural, and architectural history that mark the city of York.
