St. Theresa's Church, Colombo
St. Theresa’s Church is a Roman Catholic parish church named after Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, also known as the “Little Flower.” The parish started in 1937 with a small temporary church for a growing Catholic community. Work on the present building began in 1951, and it was consecrated in 1961. The church was first run by Dominican Fathers and was handed over in 1965 to the Redemptorist Congregation, which still manages the parish. Since then, the church has continued to support worship, education, and community activities.
The church building reflects European church styles adjusted for a tropical climate. The exterior is simple, with minimal decoration. Inside, the church is open, with a high ceiling and tall windows that allow light and air. Key features include colorful murals by Sri Lankan artist Richard Gabriel, showing Catholic themes mixed with local elements such as Leekeli dancing, and stained-glass windows depicting the life of St. Theresa.
Mass is held daily, with the largest crowds on Sundays and major religious festivals. A key annual event is the Feast of St. Theresa on October 1st, which includes special services and a procession. The church is also active in catechism classes, sacraments, and outreach programs. Visitors are usually welcome outside service times but are expected to dress modestly and behave respectfully, as the church remains an active place of worship.
