The Cathedral of Christ the Living Saviour, Colombo

The Cathedral of Christ the Living Saviour, Colombo

Cathedral of Christ the Living Saviour is the main Anglican cathedral in the country and the seat of the Bishop of Colombo. It was consecrated on November 7, 1973, and replaced the older Christ Church Cathedral in Mutwal, which had become too small for the growing congregation. The cathedral was planned as a modern church building, focusing on space, light, and comfort rather than copying older European church designs.

The building does not follow the usual long rectangular shape seen in many British churches. Instead, the building has a hexagonal or octagonal shape influenced by local religious forms, including Buddhist temples, and from outside it looks like a large tent. The design reflects the idea of life as temporary and the church as a gathering place rather than a permanent monument. Its concrete, open structure also suits the local climate.

Inside, the space is open and bright, with high ceilings and open sides that allow air to circulate and keep it cool. Unfinished walls and columns represent the Church as a work in progress. Seating is arranged around a central altar in a cross-like layout, with tall glass panels bringing in natural light. The cathedral is used regularly, especially on Sundays and during festivals such as Christmas and Easter, and visitors are welcome outside service times if they dress modestly and remain quiet.
