Jawatta Mosque, Colombo
Jawatta Mosque was established in 1941 on land that formed part of the Jawatte Burial Grounds. The land was donated by Maas Thajoon Akbar, and the mosque grew next to a cemetery that includes Commonwealth War Graves. From the start, it served both religious and community needs. As worshipper numbers increased over the years, the mosque was expanded to support daily prayers, Friday gatherings, and major Islamic events.
The mosque follows an Indo-Saracenic architectural style, with domes and minarets that give it a clear Islamic form. Over more than 70 years, parts of the building have been extended or rebuilt, but these features remain visible. Inside, open prayer halls supported by columns are designed for large gatherings and face the mihrab. Windows and openings allow natural light and airflow, keeping the space bright and comfortable.
The mosque also serves as a community center. Besides daily prayers, it offers religious classes, student accommodation, and community support. Its link to the burial grounds makes it important for funerals and memorial prayers. Fridays and religious festivals are the busiest times. Visitors are welcome outside prayer hours if they dress modestly, remove their shoes, and behave respectfully.
