Stara Ljekarna (Old Pharmacy), Dubrovnik
The Old Pharmacy (Stara Ljekarna) is one of Dubrovnik’s most fascinating landmarks, offering a glimpse into centuries of medical tradition and monastic life. Established in 1317 within the Franciscan Monastery, it is considered one of the oldest still-functioning pharmacies in Europe. For over seven hundred years, this institution has served not only the friars but also the citizens of Dubrovnik, blending healing practices with the city’s long history of trade, science, and culture. Its survival through wars, sieges, and natural disasters is a testament to Dubrovnik’s resilience and its dedication to knowledge and care.
Housed within the cloister of the Franciscan Monastery, the pharmacy retains much of its historic charm. Visitors can admire original furniture, antique pharmaceutical tools, and centuries-old laboratory equipment, all preserved as part of a small museum adjacent to the functioning dispensary. The shelves are lined with beautifully decorated ceramic jars once used to store herbs, minerals, and remedies, many of them brought to the city by ships trading across the Mediterranean. Among the treasures are manuscripts and texts on medicine and botany, reflecting the scholarly pursuits of the Franciscan friars.
Today, the Old Pharmacy still operates, making it a rare sight where past and present seamlessly meet. Tourists can walk through the same spaces where monks once prepared herbal cures, while also seeing how the pharmacy continues to serve the community in modern times. More than a historic curiosity, the Old Pharmacy offers an intimate window into Dubrovnik’s cultural heritage, where faith, science, and daily life have intertwined for centuries.
