Street Singers (Straßenkünstler), Cologne
Street Singers (Straßenkünstler) are the changing musicians who perform on the large stone forecourt beside the cathedral. Solo vocalists, guitarists, violinists and small groups use the Gothic façade as a backdrop, while travellers and local residents gather around them. Repertoires range from acoustic pop and folk songs to classical music, opera and traditional melodies, so the atmosphere varies throughout the day.
Performances follow detailed local rules. Musicians may play only during the first 30 minutes of each hour, after which they must move at least 300 metres away; the same performer cannot use one location twice in a day. Amplifiers are prohibited, and only marked performance areas may be used near the cathedral. Officers may fine rule-breakers, while a trial signal light warned musicians when performances became too loud.
The open paving and the cathedral’s massive walls can produce sudden gusts, requiring performers to secure sheet music and instrument cases. A marked sensory contrast appears inside the cathedral, where visitors are expected to remain quiet and singing or instrument playing is prohibited outside authorised church services.

Cologne's Architectural Landmarks Walking Tour
Around 75% of Cologne was destroyed by Allied bombing during World War II. Following such devastation, it meant that most of what was built immediately after the war came from the so-called “As quickly and cheaply as possible” school of architecture. Eventually, as the things settled, the architects were given the chance to build something that would really stand out.
